Emler appointed to examine Canadian trade relations

Senate Majority Leader Jay Emler has been appointed has been appointed by The Council on State Governments (CSG) to examine key Canadian trade and border security issues. Emler is one of six Kansas lawmakers on The Council on State Governments’ Midwest-Canada Relations Committee. The Midwest-Canada Relations Committee works to represent the state and provincial viewpoint on policies that affect the U.S.-Canada relationship. "Aside from trade issues, we will also be looking at homeland security issues," said Emler, who earned a master's degree in Homeland Security and Defense from the Naval Postgraduate School. "We hear a lot in the news about securing our southern border, but - in these turbulent times - it is equally important for us to ensure the security of our northern border." Emler is the only legislator in the country to have completed the Security Studies program at the Naval Postgraduate School. He currently serves as vice chair of the Joint Committee on Kansas Security, as a member of the NCSL Task Force on Homeland Security, and is an ex-officio member of the Governor's Council on Homeland Security.
Long days ahead for state lawmakers as House, Senate miles apart

As lawmakers begin to work toward passing a $14 billion budget, the veto session is being watched by many Kansans and two of this area’s legislators agree the wrap-up work is going to mean some long days. Senate Majority Leader Jay Emler, R-Lindsborg, said the session has been focused on the budget and related issues. “With the financial constraints the state is facing right now, we have not seen as much new legislation proposed this year,” Emler said. “In some ways, that has made for a productive session because it has allowed most of the Legislature to remain focused on essential priorities, such as balancing the budget, reforming the state’s unemployment fund, making sure Kansas Public Employees Retirement System is viable for the long term, and strengthening our workers’ compensation laws.”
